There are three good ways to start growing your own ornamental grasses. One can attempt to grow ornamental grasses from seed. I am sure it would work but I have never seen it done. You can buy them from us ready to plant, or you can grow them from divisions.

Buying the plants ready to install is the easiest method. You can obtain a plant that is hardy and of a size that is easy to maintain. Weed control will be at a minimum for the plant will have a head start over its competition. Yet if you have time, enegry, and love to work in the garden, growing from divisions is cheap and easy. Start with a small parent clump of grass that you want to divide in the spring time and dig it from its location. (You can also buy 1 gal plants for division.) Larger clumps are harder to divide than smaller clumps. I take an ax or a shovel and chop up the clump into 1 qt. size clumps. Just replant the clumps to the same depth as when you dug up the original clump. Keep the clumps moist and within a few weeks you will have many new plants. That sounds easy? Well it is. This is not rocket science.
